Here's a Additionally, sequential reads aren't very likely even with Skyrim. Ībel Vazquez Posts: 3334 Joined: Tue 12:25 am Software obtained to implement the RAM drive was acquired. It would be nice to see some numbers from other people who have the ability to test this as well. It depends on the type of mods, with high-res texture packs being the most demanding. That means eventually you may need a 10gb or larger chunk of memory, and some older motherboards may not be able to handle it, requiring a much larger system upgrade.

I would remind people interested in a RAM drive, that adding mods on top of the game's current data will expand storage requirements on any RAM drive created. Results will of course vary by machine, but these are the numbers I saw in my i7 Quad-Core with 12gb installed. If you move Skyrim's Data drive to a RAM drive using a tool like Steam Mover, you can get amazingly fast load times and possibly eliminate load times and stutter altogether. What that means for people with systems that can handle 12gb or more: it can be well worth the investment to bump your RAM up and grab a copy of some RAM drive software (my current trial doesn't expire until April 2012). Theoretically it is in the microseconds, since it reads directly from memory via a driver. Average seek times per device are what you would expect: 10ms for the SATA II drive, 0.1ms for the SSD drive, and almost nonexistant for the RAM drive (currently don't have a tool that can test seeks on it). The RAMdrive trounces the other devices easily.

3 iterations of 1gb data transfer yielded these results: I did throughput testing first, using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1.

The RAM drive was what I considered to be the minimum size needed to run skyrim from, given that the data directory in a vanilla install is about 5.5gb. Items of note: both the standard SATA II drive and the SSD drive I have are around a year or so old, so not totally indicative of current off-the-shelf technology (but good enough to form initial impressions). Since there was a bunch of talk recently on the forums about the benefits of SSD vs regular SATA drives (or even RAID configs) and how that compared to RAM drives, I decided I'd fire up all three and take a look to satisfy my curiosity for actual results.įor the tests I did, I used the following:
